RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
